This competition was a part of the 2021 GMiS conference. During this 4 day competition our teams of roughly 10 engineering students from around the globe and 2 professional mentors were given a task each afternoon and given 24 hours to research, meet and develop solutions, and make a video presenting our solutions.

The list of challenges for each day were as follows:

Day 1: Create a video resume

Day 2: Find a way to use the data being collected by NASA's new Earth Systems Observatory to fight climate change

Day 3: Create a product that helps teach 5th graders about how STEM can be used to mitigate climate change

Day 4: Think of a major solution to fighting climate change and make a video from a future setting explaining how your solution mitigated climate change over time

For Day 1 of the competition my first team, the NASA Exploradores, met to discuss ways the key components of a video resume, ways to make our videos more creative and unique, and find good example video resumes. I was able to leverage my video editing skills to quickly script, record and edit my video resume. I was able to lend a helping hand to 2 other teammates who were struggling to edit their videos.

For Day 2 of the competition the NASA Exploradores met again to brainstorm and research what data the Earth Systems Observatory would be collecting and what solutions against climate change that the data could inspire. We each made our case for the solution that would be most beneficial and all agreed to discuss about 4 major issues in our video.

For days 3 and 4 I competed on the Lockheed Martin LMI-6 team. During day 3 my new team again researched the most important ways STEM is being used to fight climate change now. We decided on reducing plastic waste and recycling plastic into DIY projects. The team then made a presentation and designated 2 team members to present to the judges.

On Day 4, we gathered once more research the most innovative solutions that engineers were testing to fight climate change. The idea of dropping saplings from drones to replant trees in deforested areas seemed very compelling to us and we developed a creative story line to make our case for why we thought this idea could make a major impact over 30 years.

At the concluding ceremonies of the competition, the NASA Exploradores were crowned the victors. Much more rewarding than the victory, however, was meeting and working with all of the other students and mentors.
